Happy Earth Day! Today may not be as popular as Christmas or Halloween, but I always find this holiday such an important celebration of nature’s beauty and all that our planet provides for us – along with being a reminder to keep fighting to protect our home. In contrast to those profound points, celebrating Earth Day can be simple and easy to incorporate into your everyday routine. Here are five ways to celebrate today (and year-round)!

1. Join a clean-up

Cleaning up can be a lot of fun, especially if you’re doing it with friends and for such a good cause. Search for local organizations and movements that may be hosting events, or even start your own clean-up! Find a beach or park, grab some (or in my experience, A LOT) of gloves and trash bags, and you’re good to go. You can also clean up by picking up trash during a run or while walking your dog.

2. Try climate-friendly meals

Eating plant-based meals helps to reduce your carbon footprint. We need to fight the misconception that vegan food isn’t delicious, because just thinking about cauliflower wings, veggie pasta, and black bean burgers makes me hungry. There are also many delicious desserts you could have, made by substituting plant-based ingredients like almond/oat milk for traditional components like cow milk and eggs.

3. Promote sustainable fashion

Fast fashion has detrimental effects on the environment (check out my blog post on fast fashion for more). To support sustainable/slow fashion, trade clothes with friends, go thrifting, or learn how to DIY new clothes you like from old shirts and pants you don’t wear.

4. Become more self-aware

It’s important to understand your individual effects on the environment in order to develop suitable habits to become more sustainable. Luckily, there are some great websites out there that can help you to calculate things like your foodprint, your plastic consumption, and your carbon footprint

5. Speak up, take action

Write a letter to a local leader/government representative about environmental issues and their impact; your voice MATTERS! Try topics like clean water, renewable energy, climate education, and natural disaster relief. Additionally, look into getting involved with local organizations and helping out with their initiatives. Action is just a Google search away!

I hope that these tips can inspire you to get involved locally, switch to a more eco-friendly diet, or change your shopping modes. These are some great ways to celebrate Earth Day, but the real impact comes from building habits and a lifestyle that aims to protect our planet year-round!
