Fireworks Aren't so Dynamite for the Earth

Happy almost Fourth of July!! With this patriotic holiday coming up, I've been thinking of beach days, barbecues, and of course, fireworks. Unfortunately, that long-loved tradition has many negative effects on the environment, but fortunately, there are some alternatives that can be just as fun!
Downsides of Fireworks
Fireworks incorporate metals like strontium, copper, and aluminum, and the chemical combustion of fireworks comes with harmful pollutants like carbon dioxide, perchlorate, sulfur dioxide, and particulate debris. These pollutants end up in soil and waterbodies, which can cause lasting affects on the health of ecosystems and their inhabitants.
Fireworks may entertain us, but they are confusing, loud, and terrifying for wildlife nearby. There have been many instances of animals abandoning their habitats, suffering adverse health effects from stress, becoming lost, or being killed by a vehicle in an attempt to flee the area. Furthermore, ingestion of pollutants left behind by fireworks can cause severe harm to animals.
Sparks and embers from fireworks can end up starting destructive wildfires, especially in the hot, dry summer air.
Alternatives!
Sparklers: These mini-fireworks can still cause contamination, health, and fire risks, but they are a better choice than fireworks if used in moderation and disposed of correctly.
Drone shows: drones with lights are flown in formation to create captivating images without environmental or sound pollution.
Laser shows: some areas have systems set up to project light beams in beautiful patterns, which can be just as captivating as fireworks.
Eco-friendly versions: companies like Disney have replaced the metals and perchlorates of traditional fireworks with nitrogen-based fuels to reduce the amount of smoke and pollution, or used mechanical systems to launch fireworks rather than with gunpowder.
Fireworks are beautiful, but they're a short-lived spectacle while posing long-term negative effects on the environment. I encourage you all to switch to safer, more eco-friendly options and educate others to do the same, so that we can all enjoy celebrating the country with peace of mind!
